About Neeni-Tuti

Neeni-tuti, as she is widely known to industry insiders, is a talented drummer and dancer with an exuberance and passion for the rhythms and dances of West Africa. Janine has an unwavering passion for bringing people together, inspiring individuals and providing expert instruction, team building, community building, and interactive entertainment through African drumming and dance.


Neeni has the grace and energy you'd expect from someone who has been a dancer for all but the first 4 years of her life. As well as completing specialised training in ZUMBA®, Neeni has also completed a group exercise instructor course, has 25 years of formal dance training including Jazz, Tap, Ballet and Contemporary Theatrical performance recognised and assessed by the Australian Academy of Dance, and studied traditional West African drumming and dance with master teachers from Guinea and Senegal for 12 years.


In 1998 Neeni founded  AFROBEAT in the Blue Mountains, NSW. Afrobeat continued to grow into Western Sydney, Central Sydney, the Central Coast and the Illawarra before moving to Melbourne in 2006. Neeni has since designed her popular interactive drumming show,  instructed individuals and groups in West African drumming and dance technique, facilitated drumming circles with diverse audiences throughout Australia and Indonesia,  and performed alongside some of Australia’s most renowned African, Reggae, Samba and Latin Bands. She’s also made a guest appearance on ABC’s ‘Strictly Dancing’, featured on Channel 10’s ‘Totally Wild’ teaching her youth percussion group, and founded all-girl drum n dance sensation MO’FYAH who supported AFRO MOSES (awarded Australia's Living Legend' at Sydney's Opera House in 2012).


The only female ‘African style’ percussionist to be endorsed by Billy Hydes Drumcraft (Australia’s largest retailer of percussion) Neeni was sponsored by Billy Hydes to study the art of DRUM CIRCLE Facilitation with leading exponent and world renowned 'father of the modern facilitated drum circle movement' - Arthur Hull (California, USA).


In 2012 while based in Bali, Neeni completed Grand Master Mamady Keita’s Mini Guinea Camp in hosted by TTM Asia and Australia Network (other certified teachers and directors of Tam Tam Mandingue TTM) including Dance instruction by Master Dancer ‘Sekou Soumah’ from Portland Oregon USA. 


Neeni has collaborated with African, Reggae and blues-alternative acoustic Artists in Australia and Indonesia; founded World Reggae Jam - Geelong’s premier LIVE Reggae event, with the vision of bringing musicians and lovers of Reggae together under the one roof;  is founder and trainer of DRUMS TALK!™ Drum Circle Facilitator and Teacher Training; continues to facilitate events for Afrobeat, and offer African Drumming and Dance workshops.


Feeling recharged with inspiration, cultural connection and a sense of community, Neeni returned to Australia in 2013 and continues to run Afrobeat.

Following a trip to Africa in 1995, Afrobeat Founder and Principle Facilitator Janine Rew became fascinated with African Rhythms and subsequently studied Traditional Percussion and dance under renowned master teachers from West Africa for 12 years. Learning predominantly from Master Percussionist and Dancer - A. EPIZO BANGOURA from Guinea, West Africa.

 

A graduate in interpersonal communications, group processes and facilitation (B.App Sci - Social Ecology: Majoring in Community Development and Organisational Change), Janine immediately recognised and identified the connections between African Rhythms and their application to group processes, team building, personal transformation, healing and community building.

 

A versatile and respected professional, Janine hails from a diverse background of more than 25 years of formal dance training and performance with the Leanne McKeirnan School of Dance in Geelong VICTORIA, and completed more than 23 exams over 12 years under the Australian Academy of Dance where she was awarded an ‘Honours’ average passing rate and several ‘outstanding achievement’ awards for Jazz.

Experience

As well as her own all-girl drum and dance sensation 'MO'FYAH', Janine has performed as percussionist and dancer alongside some of Australia’s most renowned African Artists and Bands including, Epizo Bangoura’s ‘African Express’, Mohamed Bangoura’s ‘Mohata’, Pape Mbaye’s ‘Chosani Afrique’ and earlier band ‘Tambacounda’, Afro Moses and Moses O’Jah Band, Gervais Koffi and the African Diaspora, Chris Gudu and Jive Kiyana, King Marong’s SAFARA & Afro Madinko, Kit Drummers Deva Permana and Declan Kelly, Master Drummer Aliou Sylla (Guinea), visiting international Master Dancer Abdoulaye Camara (Sweden/Guinea), Percussion group ‘Le Phat’, International Choreographer Germaine Acogny (Senegal/France) and Toni Nation.

Janine also made a guest appearance on ABC’s ‘Strictly Dancing’ and featured on Channel 10’s ‘Totally Wild’ teaching her youth percussion group.

 

A versatile performer, Janine has also been popular with Samba, Afro-Brazilian and Latin-American Bands and performed with, the late Jose Prates’ Tropicana Band, Samba Frog, DrumSkull and Capoeira Filhos Da Bahia at Darling Harbour’s Brazilian Festival.

Janine has been instructing individuals and groups in West African Percussion and Dance Technique and facilitated Drumming Circles with diverse audiences throughout Australia for the past 15 years.

 

By invitation, Janine spent 2 months providing intensive performance training and business mentorship to one of Bali's first African Drum & Dance groups - HAMANAH. Janine performed alongside some of Indonesia's best West African style percussionists, featured at Sanur's International 'Village Festival' with 'Hamanah Kang' and facilitated daily interactive drumming workshops (featuring on local Indonesian TV), her audition with the group secured a residency contract at Bali Safari & Marine Park and she continued to perform regularly with Hamanah throughout their residency.

 

Janine went on to base herself in Bali for 4 years where she regularly featured with Reggae bands throughout Indonesia, including performances at the annual Reggae festival 'Jammin Island' (on the Gili Islands, off the coast of Lombok), Apache Reggae Bar (Kuta), and various private (Weddings), corporate events and NYE celebrations, and collaborated with African, Reggae and blues artists.
